At our Health Sciences Taster Day

you'll:

  • Choose to explore either Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, Health Care or Dental Care when you save your place
  • Use our Centre for Simulation in Health & Care to undertake day-to-day tasks of the health care team
  • Take part in interactive simulations in our facilities
  • Hear about your options with exciting career paths and links into this a field of work that can help secure rewarding jobs
  • Chat with current students about the practical learning and placement options you'll have as part of in 91ÉçÇø

Taster Day location and meeting point

Check in opens from 9.30am at St Michael's Building, St Michael's Rd, PO1 2DT. Look out for our students in purple T-shirts who'll help direct you.

If you're arriving by coach or minibus, we recommend parking on Museum Road, 91ÉçÇø which is just outside of the Sports Centre. For more information on checking in and how to get here, take a look at our guide to taster days page.

Here's what you can look forward to at our upcoming Health Sciences Taster day.

We're excited to meet you. Check in, make yourself comfortable and get ready to learn about studying a degree in Health Sciences at uni.

Here's our guide to subject taster days, should you want to learn a little more about our taster days before booking.

Check-in from 9.00am at St Michael's Building, 91ÉçÇø PO1 2DT.

You'll get an introduction to studying our courses and where you could go with a degree in Dentistry, Healthcare, Pharmacy, and Biomedical Sciences. We'll then split you into your groups ready to start your chosen session*.

*When you book your place at the Health Sciences Taster Day, you'll choose from the following options of Health Science to get involved in:

Dental Care

Dental Nurses, Hygienists and Therapist are crucial to helping people maintain good oral health by providing treatments, carrying out procedures and giving dietary and hygiene advice.

Healthcare

Resuscitate. Make cardiac assessments. Save a life. Our Healthcare sessions focus on Paramedic Science, Diagnostic Radiography and Medical Imaging, Operating Department Practice and Nursing, so you can learn the fundamentals of how to save someone's life.

Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences

The human body is an exciting and complex thing. Ever considered how they work when we're feeling good? And what goes wrong when we're feeling poorly? See how Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Biomedical Science is helping to improve the lives' of patients.

Dental Courses - Tooth Extraction (Dental Care)

Experience extracting a tooth on teaching simulation models and work together as a dental team learning some of the dental language you hear when visiting the dentist.

Paramedic Science and Diagnostic Radiography and Medical Imaging - Restart the Heart and X-Rays (Healthcare)

You will take part in our 'Restart the Heart' session teaching chest compressions and using a defib. Learn how Diagnostic Radiographers use X-Rays to help diagnose patients who are unwell or injured. You will have the opportunity to see how the X-Ray machine works for patients that are too sick to leave their ward and get to test your anatomy knowledge using our Anatomage table- see what we really look like on the inside!

Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Biomedical Science – Escape Room (Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences)

Join us as we work through a patient case to show how pharmacy, pharmacology and biomedical science work together to improve patient lives. See how clinical skills and scientific knowledge are used to make real life decisions in patient care. Remember to bring your detective skills with you as you will need to find a series of clues throughout the event to save your patient! Are you ready to take on the joint pharmacy, pharmacology and biomedical science escape room?

*You'll attend one of these sessions based on the Health Science subject area you select when you book your place.

Fuel-up. Feel free to bring your own lunch for the day or grab something from a university cafeteria or local outlet.

Dental Courses - Tooth Extraction (Dental Care)

Operating Department Practice and Nursing - Airway Management and Patient Assessment (Healthcare)

You'll take part in a practical session on how to use specialist equipment to keep people breathing when they can’t do it for themselves in ‘Introduction to Airway Management’. Our Nursing team will introduce you to patient assessment and take you through how to examine both the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Biomedical Science – Escape Room (Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences)

Join us as we work through a patient case to show how pharmacy, pharmacology and biomedical science work together to improve patient lives. See how clinical skills and scientific knowledge are used to make real life decisions in patient care. Remember to bring your detective skills with you as you will need to find a series of clues throughout the event to save your patient! Are you ready to take on the joint pharmacy, pharmacology and biomedical science escape room?
